Québec Slang!

Tourist time hit la ville de Québec...
so here is a special post on slang...
let's just call it..
le dictionnaire Anglais-Québecois
or
the English-Québecois Dictionary!
So...don't be shy if you want further help with pronunciation...
and yes...
I realize you may never use any of these expressions...
but kind of fun anyway...
oh and some of these are not necessarily slang but expressions you may hear....

Summer in Québec city 2011

Okay, booking a holiday?
coming to la belle ville de Québec?
well bienvenue
and here is a look at what is happening this summer....

Cirque du Soleil are back in the lower town for a continuation of their
free show...Les Chemins Invisibles
from June 24th to September 3
it is a fabulous show!!
No chairs allowed which can make it rather long for people who do not like to stand for an hour.
But, if you book ahead there are VIP seats at 15$ a seat...
oh and seat really means a stool in an un-assigned seating area.
That said, I strongly recommend you make the reservation since it is tiered seating
and even the tallest of individuals will have a hard time seeing the show.....
I am fairly tall and found it difficult...
great show so don't miss it!!!
http://www.youtube.com/Cirquedusoleil
Oh and Sunday and Monday they take a break so there is no show

and

Robert Lepages' show The Image Mill
is back.
If you have not seen it then you really will be impressed...
I strongly suggest though that you take a chair with you.
Oh, and this year there is a 3D extra, although it has not received great reviews
but a free show is a free show...
right?
Enjoy!

Cap à l'Aigle - Charlevoix

It looks like I will be heading up to Tadoussac
a fair bit this upcoming summer
so...
I am going to complete a series of posts that
give you a small glimpse into the unique homes
that dot the landscape between Quebec city
and Tadoussac.
Some of these homes dates back to 200 years ago!!
So first up on the tour.....
Cap à l'Aigle...
The beauty of Cap à l'Aigle is highlighted in the spring
by the numerous lilac gardens that dominate this village

These summer homes are soon not visible from the road due to the magnificent varieties of lilacs
that will soon cover all the bushes...
All these homes have a magnificent view over the St. Lawrence River!
Certainly I will have to update this post in a few weeks with the spectacular
lilacs that will soon take over....
over 1000 different varieties!

Next up.....St. Irenée....

National Patriots' Day in Québec or Victoria Day Weekend elsewhere

Well, wherever you live in Canada
you have a long holiday weekend
and here is my favourite part of the celebration...
quite simply....
sitting outside....fire going.....dreaming of summer....

But, there seems to be a bit of confusion or perhaps just interest in what this day is all about...
Well, quite simply put,
Journée naitonale des patriotes commemorates democracy and
the struggle to be free from British rule in 1837-1838.
The holiday itself is pretty young,
dating back to the first actual holiday taking place in  2003 after the Québec government
decided to recognize the monday before May 25th as National Patriots' Day.

 So....Bonne Journée nationale des patriotes
or
Happy Victoria Day!!!

Bedroom Inspiration and Decisions to Make

Okay, my inspiration image is no surprise to me....
(source: Rachel Ashwell.com)
 Rachel Ashwell of course...
I love the layering of whites
with the additional soft impact of blue
and of course my rug will bring in a nice touch of colour on the floor.....
but do I go with creamy white walls?
When I first attempted to decorate our bedroom I got stuck on the wall colour....
So....here we go with what I have in this room already...
what I have bought
and what I think needs to stay....
Bought
2 of these .....20$ each...a bit scratched on the top..
but adorable...
paint them creamy white??
source: http://houseandhome.com/design/gilded-french-bed
 or ...gold...or silver....????

Bought
E-bay....oooohhhh what a good deal
$ 5.25 with shipping of 75$
an all wool rug imported from India...
my pièce de résistance!!

Have
a full wall of PAX wardrobe from Ikea....
storage necessity
but should I change it up??
somehow?
Have
Staying?
Antique dresser, very heavy drawers though
and possibly impractical but I love the style!!
Have
I have two of these lamps, lovely pink-y colour glass base with a velour shade
but
they seem small in this room with these high ceilings ....
I am thinking I could go big
find something that gives a good
sense of drama to the space....

The ceiling is all pine and cathedral...

          Okay,
I really need some help here!!!

Bedroom RENO is on!!

Finally.... oop-a-lie  !!!!
I have been looking for a rug that I could envision using in our bedroom and
a bit had to do with colour and
a lot
had to do with budget...
so thanks to e-bay!
It all came together when I scored this wool rug on e-bay tonight....
I am loving the yellow, taupe, turquoise (which you may not see clearly in my image)
so, it is on,
bedroom reno on its way  !!
oh, yes, okay....
5.25$ plus shipping .....75.00$
yep, a whopping $80.25

Pickin' up the spring syrup!

Before you take a look I have to apologize for the quality of images...
not great..
of course, did not think to bring my camera along as I was too focused on the excitement of finally getting our maple syrup!
So, with that in mind.....
We were a bit late this year but off we went to pick up our maple syrup..
and there is nothing better than getting it right from the source!!
and....
nothing better than a visit to the farm....
I love it !!
 You can enjoy the scenery
and
the quaint and the typical ....
 the Québec farm house!
I love the blue....
The sloped tin roof is all about the weather and the amount of snow that gets dumped over the course of the winter....

And of course a rocker out front is fairly essential as well....
and some chairs for guests....freshly painted!
So hard to resist a photo of weathered barn wood...
wishing I had remembered my camera since my iPhone is fairly limited in quality...
Oh, what I could do with this!!
The possibilities are endless....

Taking part in Mosaic Monday at the little red house...
and of course over to Debbiedoos Newbie Party

I am so in love with this weather!!!
Spring is here in full force
and
I brought some of it indoors....

I love forcing branches inside...
hmmm...that word always sounds a tad aggressive
but
the results are always spectactular!
and they are just starting to
open up....
next up, some forsythia?
oh, and did I mention the cost?
And...for those of you that want to get outside, click here and check out spring on the deck

UPDATE: 5 DAYS LATER
Imagine...I saw these same branches for sale at the market for 6$ a bunch...
oop-a-lie!

I am hooking this up to Beach Cottage for Good Life Wednesday
and sharing this with Kate over at Chic on a Shoestring Flaunt it Friday
and over to Finding Fabulous: Frugalicious Friday

Home Bakery Bundle Giveaway

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Dr. Oetker for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

Okay, so here's the deal.
I work.... a lot!
But, I have a family that needs to eat like every other family.
And, some of those times it is not easy to coordinate the food needs with the reality of everyday life.
On those occasions when I am looking for something really good and really fast...
I stop at our local grocery store to pick up pizza!
My gang has been fairly fussy about store-bought pizza in the past but
we have found one that has proven to be a keeper!
Dr. Oetker!
My friend turned me on to it one day when she told me that her family were turned on to  this new pizza they had discovered.
Her description was quite exact when she said,  "it tastes like bread fresh from the oven with high-quality pizza items covering the top."
So,
if you have not yet tried it out then you have the perfect opportunity right now!
Divine.ca is hosting a Home Bakery Bundle Giveaway and all you have to do is enter before the deadline of June 13th
... 2011 that is
for a chance to win 1 of the 5 bundles.
It is 500$ worth of goodies that include the following:

Bon Matin!

Ridin' the rails again this morning on my way to la belle ville de Montréal
and I have to share with you a lovely image that I spotted
yesterday...
I know, I know...
you may think I am losing it but really I appreciated observing this masterpiece in action!.

I really should have asked the gentleman creating this work of art to stand in for the photo.
The care he was taking in his work made me hesitant to disturb the display!

The Spring Deck

The spring deck
in a country with 4 very defined seasons
can be
quite special...
first of all..
the view in spring is quite particular
given the lack of vegetation.
From those muskoka chairs you can slowly watch the transition from one season to the next!!

So....
in recognition of a time of year that brings about great change...
here we go...
with springtime on the deck
 to summer on the deck........
of course my disclaimer is the following:
the springtime images are current
and the summer is remnants of the summer past!
...oh and if you get cold....just click on any image to go inside.......
Pretty bare, plants are not in and no leaves on the trees to hide the deck...
pretty exposed you might say!
Oh, and yes, this is the front of our home.
Yep, there is the road.
We see all the comings and goings....
although our road is a dead-end so traffic is pretty minimal.
The fire-pit is ready and certainly gets lots of use from the moment the chairs hit the deck floor!
Spring, Summer and Fall....a couple of times on a good sunny ski day as well!!

l

So, here we go....
transition time....
in summer the deck resembles a tree house!

The side deck is great for reading!
We love ferns since they seem to love us!!
Sometimes the reading lounge makes its way to the front deck from the side!
Strange how things always get moved around...
isn't it??
So, there you go....
the deck!
Can't wait to see this transition actually take place!
