Elephants, tigers and.... the circus?

People still go to the Circus?
Apparently so.... on the weekend we headed up to one of our favourite places....Tadoussac.
Where the lakes still look like this....

BRRRRR......oh yes...winter coats and hats and mitts were in order for this trip!!
but...on the way up
we were stopped on the highway when we saw an ambulance, fire engines etc.
to deal with this....

but when we looked closer we saw this.....
sorry for the quality of my photos, there are better ones that I pinned from Radio Canada....

we took this from our car and yes that is an elephant....
the last thing we expected to see on the side of the road!!
Oh and throw in a few of these.....

Apparently the driver of the truck realized that the engine was on fire, pulled over and rescued the elephant which was in the back of his tractor trailer.....
The tigers were in another truck traveling behind.

Quite the sight...
but really, my heart sank when I saw these animals in the cold, on the side of a highway....

So, people still go to the circus?
Really?
What do you think?

  1. When I saw this post pop up, I thought you were going to the circus and was dismayed! When you can walk a tiger on a leash, in unfamiliar surroundings, with the smell of fire nearby, it tells a lot about the condition of the animals. And, people support this business? Seriously! Maureen

  2. Now that is a sight one doesn't see everyday! LOL
Yes, the circus comes to town here twice a year. They must do fairly well if they keep returning.

    1. Perhaps it comes here too. So much focus is on Cirque du Soleil here that any other type of circus seems to go without notice. We were pretty stunned and then of course, the search for a camera.... iPhone to the rescue.

  3. I've never taken my kids to a circus, marine park or the like. There is NOTHING sadder to me than seeing an elephant sitting on a stool. It's a humiliating and demeaning way to treat a majestic beast. I am not sure why there isn;t a ban in Canada. If people want to act the fool that's ok, but an animal should never be disrespected.

    1. I hear ya. I believe a lot of people would be surprised to see a traveling circus today. Certainly I was.

  4. Very strange to see an elephant by the side of the road - poor thing. I hope the elephant took the time to enjoy the view ;)

    1. It was very cold too which I am sure was not too pleasant for any of the animals.

  5. I think the days of circus animals SHOULD be over. It's cruel to make wild animals perform and confine them to cages all their lives. But I gotta say that I do have fond memories of the Shriner's Circus coming to Collingwood every year. Maybe modern day circuses should be all about trapeze and clown acts with no more animal acts, especially exotic animals like elephants, seals, lions and tigers. ...........Bardy

    1. Oh I remember that too Bardy!! I think the days of the circus should be over too. There is absolutely no point to it. I think those memories should be vaulted and let books such as "Water For Elephants" tell the story of the circus world. Cirque du Soleil, although pricey, should be as you say, our modern day circus. Take care Bardy!!
