I know, I know.... I appear to be out of action?
Believe me it is hard for me to take my eyes off this.....
Yes, the backyard project is in full swing!
There are 19 boulders sitting in our side yard today that will be moved into place by the end of the day....
big changes ahead!! I am sooo happy to get this project moving forward.
Should be finished by the end of the week....well, phase 1 that is.
Update:
More boulders in place to define the areas and act as support for the soil....
This defines the area that will become a stone terrace as well as our dining spot.
Not the great of height difference but we still need to be careful of drainage issues.
Just looking at this image convinces me we should built a pergola to go across the back balancing out the little balcony and stairs down to the back yard. The balcony is off the dining room on the main floor of our home.
Two truck loads of black soil arrived at the end of the day. It has been two days of pushing around this sandy soil which will ensure good drainage and I am anxious to get on to the good stuff.
Of course that leads us to the planting stage...
And that.
Well, that makes me nervous.
I need ideas, suggestions.....
oh boy!!

We are building two different levels out of the hill that was here. |
We will actually have a useable backyard that was once a messy hill. |
The beginning of the first level with support boulders being placed between the two levels, another 8 boulders to go for this part! |

I can't wait to see your yard when it's finished. The big boulders will add some interest. It's a lot of work but worth it. Hang in there.
ReplyDeleteThis is beyond exciting! You have such a beautiful spot and who wouldn't love a stone terrace? Didn't Jane Austen say something like, "The perfect blend of nature and artifice."? I think that is what you are going to create! ~ Maureen
ReplyDeletePretty header. Just visiting. Linda
ReplyDeleteYou guys are moving right along! This is going to be such a beautiful project when it's finished.
ReplyDeleteHey There,
ReplyDeleteI've been occupied the last few weeks moving from our home of eighteen years in California to beautiful, beautiful country of northern New Mexico, so I haven't been commenting on your project. Let me just say I love it! My mother always said "you need a stone terrace; nothing like it to enjoy your outdoor meals."
Can't wait to see finished product.
Hi Jill, I wondered what you were up to these days! So nice to have you back and wow....Northern New Mexico...any photos Jill? I would love to see some!
DeleteI have been dreaming of a stone terrace where we can enjoy meals, and the basic pleasures of outdoor life. We have spent most of our time on our front deck which is off the living room but little time in the back so it will be a lovely addition. A lot going on right now though so I am trying to keep it all under control. ;)
I'm not even an adequate amateur photographer, but you can see magnificent photos of the Aspen trees turning gold if you Google. We are on the outskirts of Santa Fe and every morning see the sun rise and the birds start to feed from our eastern exposed patio and each evening we stop whatever we are doing to ooh and aah over the glorious Santa Fe sun sets.
