One of my favourite ways to get ready for the holidays is to plant lots and lots of bulbs in pots throughout the rooms in our home.
The more... the better ...in my mind.
At the top of my list is the somewhat stinky paperwhite.
This delicate flower plays a big role in my Christmas decorating.
They are so light and pretty and work in basically any vessel that you choose for them.
They can stand on their own or in bunches.
You may want to tie them together with a ribbon as they do have a tendency to need support as they grow taller.
I love the idea of using large vintage bowls such as the one below.
White amaryllis are also my favourites, although this year they seem hard to find.
I have settled, for now, on the pink and white variety but
I have not given up on finding some lovely whites.
They too can look quite delicate.
Somehow they feel like the older sister to the paperwhite.
Somewhat more self-assured?
I often cut them once they are fully bloomed and place them in vases.
They seem to last longer.

Martha Stewart has a calendar that helps determine bloom times for your amaryllis bulbs.
I have found it to be fairly accurate, although lighting and temperature obviously play a part.
I think the sight of flowers at Christmas, whatever your choice, are always warm and welcoming.

Do you agree?
What, if any, are your favourite flowers for the holiday season?

I think both are pretty, but I have not planted any in the last couple of years.
ReplyDeletebeautiful inspiration....omg that very last pic is gorgeous...
ReplyDeleteI have never planted them...I tend to kill living plants and flowers. I have seen them at my aunt house, and they surely are beautiful in person
ReplyDeleteSweet! I've never ever planted either one of them but I think I'll be doing it this year! Thanks for the tips.

I have both of these bulbs and must plant them tomorrow!! I keep forgetting. Beautiful photos. I enjoy both of these flowering bulbs a lot.
ReplyDeleteI haven't had any indoor bulbs for years. The last thing I tried were hyacinths, but they always seem to fall over too. I love white cyclamens, but you've totally inspired me, and I'm going to plant 'something' - soon !
ReplyDeleteThanks for the gorgeous photos and inspiration x
I have never gotten them to grow and bloom. These all looks amazing. Thanks tons for linking to Inspire Me. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteI love amaryllis and paperwhites too! I just did a post on both of them. Your photos are amazing! New Follower!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Jody
Note to self - get some bulbs going for Xmas! Thanks for the reminder.
ReplyDeleteI completely forgot my amaryllis planting this year. I'm going to use your calendar to make sure I have one blooming in January when the short days always depress me a little.
ReplyDeleteI want to buy some amaryllis almost ready to bloom! :D I love this post….so many good ideas!
ReplyDeleteFunny story Re. amaryllis...when I first moved from home my mother sent me a beautiful "twin" amaryllis for Christmas. After it bloomed I threw it out with the trash! She was horrified! and told me I could have kept it for years re-blooming for holidays.
ReplyDeletePS...Paperwhites were also among her favorites and she planted a whole row across her front yard at the street. The neighbors loved them in the spring.
