I went to bed the other night with that annoying little scratchy sensation at the back of my throat.
You know that feeling.
And right away I decided that I had better be proactive.
Take control of the situation..... My kids would be laughing reading that line...they know only too well what that looks like.
I decided to get myself into cocoon-mode,
snuggle in with hot tea and blankets.
It got me to thinking about the various layers in our home that really define "cozy" for me.
I think that may be the benefit of creating those so-called layers.
It is... simply put... all those little items or collections or memorabilia
that provide you with a sense of comfort, allow you to relax and recharge.
I also got to wondering where people that live in very minimalist modern homes go
when they feel sick and need to hunker down to do battle with a cold.
It really is quite personal in the end....
the layers that is.
And perhaps not everybody needs that?
But for me it provides a sense of warmth,
a chance to reflect on life,
and an opportunity to pool my resources and recharge!
Now, don't get me wrong.
I can stare at photos of crisp, clean, sparsely decorated rooms and love them.... really.
But when I am sick, I need some "stuff".
Where do you go when you are not feeling well?

I hear you. I really do love an uncluttered home and am drawn to minimalism but still need a bit of piles for that cottage living comfort. I just cannot live without items that have been passed down and hold so much meaning surrounding us. I need to see those cherished things. Even the driftwood propped in corners and piled on tables is meaningful in our home because we gathered them from the beach together as a family.
ReplyDeleteWhen I am not feeling well I love my bedroom...my bed of fluffy white comforters and ruffled pillows with a wall of windows overlooking our gardens.
Your home has that cherished comfort that I find makes a house a home.
I need to work on getting our bedroom feeling that way. Yours sounds heavenly with ruffled pillows and all!
DeleteI'm with you - i love cozy with lots of pillows and blankets and things to read snd look at near by. Your home has nailed cozy!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry you are under the weather. I am one of those clutter~bugs. I can cozy up just about anywhere as I keep my world of comforting pieces all around. Maybe everything needs a good dusting to keep me healthy! Still, I don't have to go far to find a soft throw and good book!

I curl up in my living room with a book and a throw and a nice cup of tea. Though I am currently de-cluttering, I abhor minimalism; it makes me nervous, I always wonder "but where are the things they love?"
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear you are feeling puny and I hope what ever bug you caught is short lived!
ReplyDeleteYour cozy home looks so warm and inviting! Looks like we have a bit in common! I don't do well with clutter but I love all of my meaningful belongings and I keep most of them out so I can enjoy them. Everything comes nicely packaged with fond memories!! Everyone says they love to come to my house and I bet your family and friends say the same thing about your cheerful home! I knew I would enjoy your blog the minute I saw it and I was right! Please get better, but in the mean time, enjoy your "cozy spot", as I call it, and I'll look forward to your next posting. God bless, Lucy!
Feel better! and enjoy your cozy down time....I agree, I enjoy the comforts of home and my stuff ...along with a cozy blanket, some books and a cuppa tea. Take care!
ReplyDeleteWendy, I often think that too! Where are their "things?" And where do they sit comfortably. Deliver me from the sterile, cold, hard edges of minimalism.
ReplyDeleteI sure hope you nipped this cold 'in the bud', Donna. That's a really good question you've asked. I like my things in my cozy home and if I'm sick I don't loll in bed under the covers but I occupy the sofa or the recliner in the living room where there's a TV, laptop, book whatever I need to keep me comfortable. I have cozy throws too and I'm close to the kitchen where I can make tea. Then I just sit with my paraphernalia all around me within easy reach and 'get well'. :) Good point about the minimalist home. Not very cozy to me. Get well soon!
ReplyDeleteI love clean, uncluttered homes, but as I seem unable to keep mine that way, I just embrace the clutter... But now, I'll call it "layers", it has more chic! Get well soon!
ReplyDeleteI think my kind of cozy & yours are pretty much the same. Soft pillows, warm blankets, books & tea. Hope you feel better soon!
ReplyDeleteDonna, you've got the perfect corner to curl up and recuperate, surrounded by your lovely collections (I counted at least four, more if one counts 2 of anything as a collection. :) ) You're such a great photographer, I love these images. Pamper yourself and get well soon! xxx ~ Nancy
ReplyDeleteI'm with you, I love 'stuff', it's comforting.
ReplyDeleteI remember once feeling really rough and spending most of the day in bed. When I staggered to the bathroom and back I noticed the messy, cosy, comfort of my unmade bed with it's white sheets and white dog. One day I'd like to have the courage to never make my bed again, very decadent.
Whenever I see pictures of your home the same word springs to mind - elegant. If you ever have a mind to come to the UK, can you come to my house and rearrange everything (possibly putting most of it away) because your taste always seems more grown up than mine, and I think my style may sometimes be a bit twee. I'd love to see it from a different perspective.
I love your bookcase, and I've already pinned it! I tend to like clutter, but orderly clutter (Is that an oxymoron?) I like to bundle-up under throws by the fire with tea, books, and magazines close by. :)
ReplyDeleteYour such a wonderful photographer, I just love looking at your pretty home. It exemplifies coziness to me...with all the books and blue and white pottery and your wood table. I would love to be sick in your home next to the fireplace :) But wait, sick is bad. I don't want YOU to be sick. Drink lots of water and snuggle under the covers with a book. And I hope you feel better soon.

Donna, I just love your book arrangement. I know I hearted it, but I guess I forgot to comment. They are such beautiful photographs. I just want to sit down and read. xoox
ReplyDeleteI hope you are getting well. The flu going around here has been a bad one though I have not gotten it. My kids have had it for weeks. Just want you to know I was thinking of you.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear you weren't feeling well. My home is definitely my sanctuary when I'm feeling unwell. I love to be surrounded by much 'stuff' all the time. Minimal just doesn't do it for me at any time I'm afraid!
