Getting it all Organized: Renovation Breakdown?
Friends warned me about my kitchen design,
not enough upper cabinets....are you crazy!!
Our kitchen renovation was something that I had thought about for several years.
I gathered inspiration pics from all my favourite mags, (hundreds I believe!)
I checked out every blog possible for ideas that would work in our home.
I considered our personal needs in a kitchen, how we use the space, what we were missing, what we would love to have,
and I went from there.
It was time to put inspiration into action!

Of course, I realized that I had to deal with some problems that have always been there,
a bad door placement to the bathroom area,
a laundry room that was hidden within that bathroom
and a favourite "dumping" spot for the family.
Our kitchen was dark and needed natural light.
The ceramic floors were cracking, cupboards were old and beyond repair.
We only had one drawer,
So, for those of you planning a kitchen reno, here is a bit of thinking that went into mine and
here is a peek at how we did it...... a 10 by 12 kitchen

and now everything has its place.
Oh....one thing...prior to putting things back from the old kitchen to the new....I adopted the word "purge' as my personal mantra.

I planned stations since our space was so small, I had to be very tight with the organization of space.
The kitchen wash-up station...sink in between, dishwasher to the right and all the dishes and pots and pans in the drawers to the left. Easy and practical.
Ikea has these great lid organizers...love them! My lids were basically burried somewhere in the old kitchen. |
The utensil drawers sit right next to or rather in front of the dishwasher. Easy access.
I am a bit of a silver nut...and yep, we use it...we do have SS utensils in the drawer above. |

UGH! I need to purge my kitchen SO BADLY...and yet here I am looking at your nicely organized kitchen instead.
ReplyDeleteGood job!
I am interested in the IKEA kitchen drawer organizers you used. On their website I found the plate holders but nothing for the bowls or lids. Will you provide more information so I can find what you used? Your kitchen remodel is wonderful
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI love your kitchen, it is very pretty and obviously very organized. I like that!
I also love to find other Canadian bloggers, I live in Manitoba.
Hugs, Cindy
Thanks Ricki Jill, don't worry, it took me years to get there!
ReplyDeleteTo Anonymous, the plate holders come in different sizes and adjust, so that is what we did for the pasta bowls. The other bowls are held in place by the drawer-divider gizmo. The lid holder, which I adore, is in their kitchen section, metal and folded up. I don't think I saw it on their site either but they do have it in the store. If I remember well it was under 10$. Hope that helps. Don't hesitate to ask more questions since I really got to know the Ikea store quite well.
Thanks Cindy. Organization was the goal. Hope you all come back, sign up under 'les suiveux' if you like. Great to find fellow Canadians!
It looks great. Love Ikea! Thanks so much for linking up to my Organizing Mission Monday link party!
ReplyDeleteI really like the redo! I love white cabinets and you are so organized! The hood over the stove has a very cool shape.
ReplyDeleteSalut Mimi,
ReplyDeleteThe hood was the original wooden hood that came with this house. It is quite old and possibly not up to code but I loved it so much I could not replace it with something new. It felt too unique, if you know what I mean. Anyway, I have learned to be organized, it does not come naturally!
Your new kitchen is just fabulous! I am going to feature you on my Flaunt it Friday features. Please stop by and grab an "I was featured" button.
ReplyDeleteI love your kitchen and love that it is so well thought out. When I read your post, I thought it said "my kids were lost in my old kitchen" - fortunately it was your lids.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful transformation! We're remodeling our kitchen right now. Hope I'm half as organized! lol
ReplyDeleteRoeshel

I wondering about using IKEA organizers to retrofit my cabinets too! I'm so happy to see you got it to work with non IKEA cabinets!!!
ReplyDeleteI was going to do it after, once they are in, because I will have the inside measurements. It will cost less than what they sell for custom cabinetry!
